I've always been fascinated by stories about girls with paranormal powers. I'm talking hardcore-as in I saw the musical version of Carrie. I also dressed up as Carrie for Halloween and won $50. I dressed up as Regan from The Exorcist the next year. (Maybe that doesn't exactly count. Possession isn't exactly a paranormal power, even if it does let you spin your head 360 degrees.)

It was great coming up with my own power-full girl for the Echoes books. Rae's ability to read fingerprints - to touch a fingerprint and know what the person who left the print was thinking - gave me the chance to vicariously experience having paranormal abilities. And, hey, I think I know what I can dress up as for Halloween this year! --MM
